Brief History of the South Canterbury Drama League.
The SCDL was founded (incorporated) in 1935. The salient object then, as now, is set out in the Constitution 3 (a) “To encourage and assist the development of theatre both for its own sake and as a means of intelligent recreation among all members of the community.”
The SCDL is registered with the Charities Commission. Its early premises were at the site of the present Playhouse in Church Street purchased in 1971.
This site has seen a number of refurbishments and developments and most times of the year it is a busy place as it is the venue for most rehearsals for each section sections, the site for set building and for the four performances Little Theatre and Repertory. From time to time it is hired for visiting performances.
Members have recently voted for a change in the management structure to better delineate Governance and Management. There is now a president and six Board members. Positions are voted for on a rotational basis.
