The Junior Section has given much pleasure to South Canterbury audiences since 1962, staging pantomines and popular musicals for young performers. For many a junior production is their first introduction to theatre and this often gives the impetus for a life long involvement and love of theatre.
The Junior Section stages a major production each year in the Theatre Royal and often a second smaller production at the Playhouse.
The major production's auditions are held at the end of the fourth school term and attract about 130 young people. Performers must be between the ages of 11 and 18 years and still at school at the time of the performance. The final cast usually averages about 70 in number.
The productions are popular and attract a high level of parental support. This section’s work brings a large number of families together in a positive atmosphere and is an important thread in the overall fabric of the theatre community.
